Client: A leading investment management firm specializing in life sciences and healthcare, with a focus on advising institutional investors and private equity clients on strategic investments in digital health.
The investment management firm wanted to deepen its understanding of digital health solution providers specifically targeting the pharma industry. With pharma clients like Novartis and Bristol Myers Squibb increasingly adopting digital health tools, the firm needed insights into the competitive landscape, strengths and weaknesses of various providers, and key selection criteria from a pharma customer’s perspective. The goal was to identify the most promising digital health companies that could enhance pharma operations, R&D, and patient engagement, and provide this intelligence to guide their clients’ investment decisions.
Key challenges included:
Lack of in-depth, unbiased customer perspectives on major digital health solution providers like Dawn Health, Bright Insight, Medisafe, and Click Therapeutics.
The need for actionable insights into real-world use cases, customer satisfaction, and ROI potential to better advise investment strategies.
Understanding selection criteria from a pharma perspective, including regulatory compliance, integration capabilities, and scalability, to assess which providers had a sustainable competitive advantage.
To address these challenges, we conducted a comprehensive project that combined industry research, expert interviews, and data analysis to deliver detailed insights on each key digital health solution provider.
Market and Customer Analysis: We conducted a market analysis of the digital health landscape, identifying key players offering solutions tailored to pharma, such as digital therapeutics, patient adherence platforms, and real-world evidence (RWE) data collection tools. This included a breakdown of each provider’s core competencies, such as Bright Insight’s focus on IoT for connected devices and Click Therapeutics’ strength in digital therapeutics.
Expert Interviews with Pharma Customers: To gather authentic customer perspectives, we connected with senior leaders in pharma companies (e.g., heads of digital health or innovation) who had direct experience with these providers. They shared insights on use cases, key selection criteria, challenges with implementation, and overall satisfaction with the solutions.
Key Criteria Analysis: We identified and ranked selection criteria that pharma companies prioritize when choosing a digital health provider, such as regulatory compliance (e.g., FDA, GDPR), integration capabilities with existing pharma systems, scalability, and ROI. This analysis helped pinpoint the providers best suited for long-term partnerships in a highly regulated industry.
Solution Mapping and Recommendations: Based on the findings, we created a solution map, categorizing providers by their core strengths and specific applications in the pharma value chain (e.g., patient engagement, real-world data analytics, digital therapeutics). We then provided strategic recommendations to the investment firm on which providers showed the most promise for growth and scalability in the pharma industry.
This project equipped the investment management firm with a robust understanding of the digital health provider landscape from a pharma customer’s perspective. They gained clear insights into which digital health companies offered the best solutions for specific needs like patient adherence, chronic disease management, and regulatory compliance.
